Tuesday Tip: Electrolytes

On these hot days we’ve been blessed with, electrolyte supplementation often becomes a priority through sports drinks. Yet God has provided excellent sources directly from the foods He created. The body utilizes these natural electrolytes far more effectively than artificial options that frequently contain more harmful ingredients than beneficial ones.

One important preface: consider how much you are actually sweating and whether you truly need to replenish electrolytes. Most of the time, adding extra electrolytes is unnecessary.

Below are some quick, practical cues your body uses to signal whether added electrolytes may be helpful:

  • Continuous hard exercise lasting longer than about 1 hour (or intense intervals in the heat)

  • Visible white salt stains on your clothes or skin (“salty sweater”)

  • Working or exercising outdoors in hot/humid conditions with heavy sweat loss

  • Recovering from significant fluid loss (vomiting, diarrhea, or prolonged fever)

Usually not needed for:

  • Workouts under 60 minutes at moderate intensity

  • Sedentary days or light activity in mild weather

  • Normal daily hydration when you’re eating regular meals that include some salt, fruits, and vegetables

Thirst, pale-yellow urine, and how you feel after activity remain useful guides. Most people replace everyday electrolyte losses through food; extra electrolytes become useful mainly when sweat losses are large and prolonged.

If you answered yes to one of the situations above and need to add electrolytes, pair hydrating, potassium-rich foods with sources of sodium, magnesium, and calcium.

Try one of the following:

  • Coconut water with a banana or a handful of spinach (this also makes a great smoothie base with another fruit added)

  • Watermelon or cucumber tossed with feta, olives, or a light pinch of salt

  • Greek yogurt or milk blended with banana, berries, and a few nuts

  • Sautéed leafy greens (spinach or Swiss chard) finished with a touch of salt

  • A baked potato or sweet potato seasoned simply with salt

Enjoy the sunshine this summer! May you sweat and sparkle but never let the summer heat win! Say hello to perfectly balanced electrolytes all summer long.
